What is synthetic resin?

Synthetic resins are soft solids or viscous substances that generally consist of two main components: resin and hardener. When these two components are mixed together, a reactive resin mass is formed, which, once fully cured, becomes a plastic.

Where are synthetic resins used?

Synthetic resins are used for many different applications. We often come across them in the form of paint, for example as car paint. To protect the bodywork from corrosion, several layers of paint are applied, consisting of resins with different formulations. The final layer of acrylic resins protects the entire structure against mechanical, chemical and environmental stresses. Other important types of resin used as paint and which can be applied include alkyd resins, epoxy resins and polyurethane resins.

Synthetic resins in bridge and road construction

Epoxy and polyurethane resins are used not only as coatings but also as sealing systems in bridge and road construction. In the construction industry, the best-known type of resin is epoxy resin. Epoxy resin is used as a primer, scratch coat or sealant on concrete and steel deck slabs.
