Work on a 100-year-old floor

The brick floor of a listed former coach house in Amsterdam had – since its construction in 1907 – largely subsided. URETEK rose to the challenge and applied the FloorLift® method. The result: the majority of the floor has been raised and its load-bearing capacity restored.

The De Clercq family own the former coach house. Mr De Clercq explains: “In total, around 32 m² of the floor had subsided. This consists of a three-layer thick brick floor, set in cement and resting on a bed of sand. So, no foundations. They are beautiful clinkers, over a hundred years old, which we would very much like to preserve. We had two options for this: chipping away the entire floor and replacing the clinkers, or injecting material beneath the ground to lift the floor.”

Exciting
“URETEK was the only company that dared to attempt lifting the floor,” continues De Clercq. “Because the floor has been there for well over a century and is quite solid, URETEK could not guarantee that the floor would lift completely and end up perfectly level. It was therefore quite nerve-wracking to see how it would turn out, but I was prepared to take that risk. This solution is far easier than the chiselling option.”

Very satisfied
“The URETEK staff worked with the utmost care and went to great lengths. They spent nearly a day ensuring everything was done as neatly as possible. Because the floor was so old and uneven, it didn’t lift all the way. We’ll still have to chiselling out and re-laying about three square metres, but I don’t mind that. This was the best option and the largest section of the floor was raised by about thirty cm. I’m very pleased with it and would definitely recommend this technique!”
