Next to the pumping station in Ter Apelkanaal stands a building where the horses used to be stabled for the towboats. This former stable had subsided to such an extent that cracks had appeared in the facades. On the advice of a building consultancy, URETEK was called in to resolve the problem using the URETEK DeepInjection® method.
Gerrald van de Sande, civil engineering support officer at the Hunze en Aa’s Water Board, explains: “The building was in need of a major refurbishment and a new purpose. The first step was to raise one corner of the building so that it would stand upright again and the largest cracks in the walls would disappear. URETEK carried this out impeccably.”
Movement
“You could clearly see from the tape applied to the cracks beforehand that the building was starting to move. It’s very impressive that they managed to lift it in this way. One corner of the former stable has risen by almost five centimetres and the largest cracks are almost closed again. It wasn’t possible to lift it any further, due to the triangular timber framework, but we’re very pleased with this result.”
Next step
“On the advice of URETEK, we’re now leaving the building undisturbed for a few months. Then we’ll move on to the next step: repointing the joints and replacing the window frames and gutters. After that, we can find a new use for it and hopefully it will serve us well for many years to come!”
